Many reasons:
1. Too heavy (numero uno!)
2. ZERO wet grip
3. Would fly apart with the rotational inertia
4. Go ahead- YOU try mounting them.
5. A $50 pneumatic tire protects your $500 wheel from destruction.
6. Horrible ride quality.
Solid tires were tried over 120 years ago when the bicycle was invented. A Frenchman named Dunlop created an air-filled tire, and it was SO MUCH better than a solid one that nobody in their right mind would ride anything else.
Y aren't bike tires made from roller blade wheel material?
because it isn't TIRE
Reply:rollerblade wheels are made of plastic or some material similar to that. they are made for handling on pavement at low speeds (%26gt;10mph). ths material makes them pretty slick. bike tires must be made of rubber to give them the the grip that is essential, especially when moving 25+mph over dirt. nothing compares to the grip of a good rubber tire.
another point: think of a set of blades. you have a set of 4 wheels on each foot. you rock back and forth to move forward, basically. its stable. whereas on a bike. you are balancing on 2 wheels. you have to lean towards the inside to make a turn. physics will tell you that doing this on the roller blade wheels will cause the bike to lose all traction and slide out from under you- not very fun.
Reply:why aren't roller blade wheels made of bike tire material?
Reply:That would be a VERY uncomfortable ride.
Reply:Roller blade wheel stuff wouldn't have enough give . You need the air in the tires to absorb shock from the road.
Reply:well, if you hit a bump with a roller blade wheel you land face first. But bike tires are rough so they can handle rocks, pincones, bumps, ect.
Reply:think about big wheels. you can't stop quick enough with plastic... and thinnk about rollerblading when it is wet/icy/on gravel.
it would be highly uncomfortable.
Reply:because , with a roller blade wheel, it would be very bouncy. imagine a guy riding on a bike with those. and it would be very costly, considering the size of bike tires.
