Is roller blading as good as running?

I used to run a lot, but I can't now, because I get side-stiches really quickly, and when I run, I can't breathe.

So I've decided to roller blade to get some exercise. I roller bladed 14 1/2 miles today as fast as I could, probably 10-15mph. Is this as good as running? I eat healthy as well, I'm just such a lazy person that I want to get my exercise in. I usually just eat and lazy around.

Excercise is excercise. It depends on how much energy you expend doing it.

There is a chart at http://www.lenihan.org/sk8_calories.htm for inline skating. There are running charts on most excercise web sites.

Check out http://www.rollerblading.com.au/fitnessb... for more information on the comparison.

Beyond that, there is the issue of "can I?" and "will I?"

Inline skating and biking are much less abusive to your body than the impacts of running. I didn't run all that much but I had a knee tell me in no uncertain terms that it was not for me.

Even before my knee decided that I shouldn't run, I never got into running or biking. I did no excercise for years till a couple of friends started skating once a week one winter. They quit but I continued on and have been doing skating regularly (2-3 times a week) for over 12 years.

I skate with a local club and have found a lot of friends that I skate with.

We skate marathons for the fun of the event (I am faster than average but not enough to win any awards) and have traveled to other places for larger fun events where the emphasis is on skating and not speed.

Part of the reason that I think skating fits me better is that you cover more scenery than running and it is a lot easier to toss the skates and gear in a car than to carry a bike to somewhere new to ride.
Reply:Rollerblading is better than running in some ways.

For example it is better if you are unfitter, or just don't like getting exausted!

But running may be better if you want to get really fit.

However, rollerskating can definetly help your fitness AND running.

So good luck =]
Reply:it is as good as running , better in some ways its not as high impact on your legs. but its not good for training running because it developes the muscles in different ways
Reply:It is not as good as running, but it is an okay alternative.
