I'm 25 and really want to learn to roller blade, i can get some really cheaply.
My question is how easy is it to learn and is it worth it? (I'm in the UK)
Roller Blading?
Sure it's easy to learn just stay away from hills. It's worth it if you have someone to go blading with. Or you at least like doing things on your own. Best part will be when you get better going down hills and seeing new places.
If you want to make your life easier buy blades that have large soft wheels.(i would buy the largest you can) This makes a nicer ride but more so when you hit a rock you don't go flying. Later on you can buy nice bearings they will let you go faster but more so they are way less work.
*bob is right make sure to get pads but i would stress wrist pads. You will use them the most.
Reply:I'm 50, still Rollerblade and have taught three daughters and two grand kids. It isn't difficult at all. Make sure you get ones that fit snugly and fasten them tightly, otherwise you can't control them and they'll make your feet hurt. Then, start off on a large flat area away from obstructions. Wear knee, elbow and wrist pads for protection.
It takes a little effort at first but before you know it you'll be doing fine. Enjoy yourself.
Reply:Learning is up to you but cheap wheels or boots may be a bad start off point unless your word cheap means low price. Many people get turned off roller blading and blame themselves because of bad quality or ill fitting boots. And roller blading is worth it ,its beautiful. Do your best to relax work on that and don't be looking down ,look ahead.Have fun.
Reply:Hi! :)
Yay! I really encourage you to learn cuz it's really fun and usually not so hard to learn (that's my opinion anyway). If you know how to iceskate then it's quite easy since the technique is similar for hockey ice skates.
I would recommend that you started to learn on a flat, quite long piece of asfalt with little people around or passing. If possible, someone with patience and who already knows how to do it is also good. The basic technique is quite simple too; you just stride one leg outwards, making a ca 60 % angle forward and lean on that leg slightly, and then switch leg to repeat the motion.
Don't forget to wear a helmet and protection for wrists, knees and elbows though - it really helps if you fall :)
I don't think age matters for when you learn - I just believe it's better if you know how to ice skate since it's truly almost the same technique.
Good Luck!
Best wishes, Sophie
