Is it easier to lose weight from exercising with roller skates or roller blades (the ones like ice skates)?

'Quad' skates (wheel at each corner) use a more complicated ankle action, because they have a steering mechanism in them.

If you're not used to skating, that means each of your lower leg muscles needs to work more powerfully and suddenly, to keep you moving correctly. The bigger muscles (hip %26amp; thigh) won't be doing much, because your lower-leg stability wouldn't cope with their full power.

Because 'inline' or 'blade' skates move in a straight line (or a gentle curve), there's less for the small muscles in your lower leg to do. That means your Buttock and Thigh muscles can really get some power down. The force needed to propel you around, isn't really a challenge to these muscles (they are the strongest muscles in your body), so they can burn a lot of fat while they contract smoothly and gently.

The more smoothly you skate, and the more 'gliding' feeling you can get into the movement, the better this activity is at shifting fat. If you are staggering around, starting %26amp; stopping, and making jerky, short movements, these short, vigorous muscle contractions will be burning extra sugar instead of fat (and making you hungry %26amp; tired).

For most people (even for moderately experienced skaters, and especially for skaters who have only used the 'inline' type), a smooth 'gliding' action is easier to perform on the 'inline' (blade) type of skate. This means that they will be more likely to skate gently for a long time, and burn off a lot of fat without being fatigued and ravenously hungry.

'Quad' skates tend to be more tiring, so that you stop skating sooner and eat the whole chocolate machine.

A very experienced skater will be able to use a very nearly identical muscle action with either type of skate, so for them, the effect on bodyfat will be the same using both.

On either kind of skate, using a lot of 'crossover' movements will strongly activate muscles around your waist. By exercising these muscles, you will cause them to tighten up, and 'pinch in' your waist. This looks good, but it also allows you to move better, improves your digestion and supports your spine.

So even without removing any fat (or weight), skating can improve the look, feel and capability of your physique.

Jogging would lose more weight, more muscle movement
Reply:not certain Calandra, but I'm pretty sure it's rollerblades!
